Review: Various Artists, 35 Years of Stony Plain

Various Artists
35 Years of Stony Plain
[Stony Plain (2011)]

The Canadian label Stony Plain, over the course of the last 35 years, has released some of the finest roots, rock and blues music that Canada has produced. This two-CD, one-DVD release presents some of the highlight of the last few years, some upcoming material, and eight previously unreleased tracks by Bob Carpenter, King Biscuit Boy, and Robert Nighthawk.

The track list is a “who’s who” of Canadian greats: Jeff Healey, Corb Lund, Ian Tyson, Ray Bonneville, Amos Garrett, Spirit of the West, and Blue Rodeo. There are also tracks by Steve Earl, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, and Asleep At The Wheel. The Blues and R&B disc includes selections by Duke Robillard, Rory Block, and English legend Long John Baldry among others, and the bonus DVD includes 11 videos by such artists as Ian Tyson and The Paperboys. This also comes with a 16 page booklet with details about the label and all the selections.

A great sampler of classic Canadian music from a classic Canadian label.
